Change Thinking Quickly

images-35Coaching Tip:   How to change your thinking (and thus your feelings) Swiftly!!

Have you ever turned on a the radio, and you hear a song, or the dj yacking on about something and the ‘sound of it all’ just doesn’t fit where you are or where you want to be – in the moment – at all?

Is it irritating to you, does it grate on your nerves or get you in a feeling place that isn’t pleasing to you?

What is the obvious solution here?

You turn the radio OFF  – or –  you change the channel.

AND YES, this is EXACTLY how you change your THINKING (bad feeling-thoughts) when you know they are making you irritable, uncomfortable and keeping you from what you want and how you want to feel.

You turn them OFF or change the channel (the thought) to a better one!!

(This very thing just happened to  me this morning, which prompted this very post!    And here I am, an hour and a half later, listening, singing and dancing to a MUCH BETTER TUNE!!)

What are some easy ways to do this??

Here is a short and easy list you can refer to help you become a MASTER at being a ‘Quick Channel Changer’ or ‘Personal Channel Controller’ altogether!!

  1. Make a top 10 list of moments that bring you joy!  This is soooooooo easy  (i.e. petting a dog, connecting with people you like, learning something new, a hot cup of coffee, the smell of bbq-ing on a lazy Sunday afternoon, dancing to your favorite songs, master-chefing in your kitchen, sitting back and watching the kids play, listening to a friend recount a good story, etc.).   The brilliance and magic in doing this is that it switches where you have your focus.  You focus on what you enjoy and as you do that you begin to feel better.  Slightly at first, but each time you add another joyful THOUGHT, your feeling turns upward with it.    THEN, As you feel better and better, it loops back to your head/thoughts.  and what you think, and you will notice you begin thinking better, more supportive and encouraging thoughts.   Et voila!  You are on a better channel!!
  2. Know your top 5 Values in life  (i.e.  I value honesty, sharing, learning, supporting and fairness)  Here is a list of tons of values to help you get clear on knowing yours:   When you know your values, they act as an internal Navigational System, and you choose smarter and wiser for yourself – and ULTIMATELY – towards your desired outcomes.  ALL OF THEM!!
  3. Phone a friend.  sometimes when you fall too far in a hole of negative thinking-feeling, it is hard to get the leverage you need to hoist yourself out alone.  SO, Phone a friend who supports you through and through and whom you can ABSOLUTELY COUNT ON.  Ask this gem if they will please talk you out of your hole (off your bad channel)  with a few short ‘rah-rah’ statements.  I do this plenty!  We all need someone in our corner, that is nothing to hide!!    (This is largely why God created us in the first place – to help one another!)
